Austria has already banned certain EU-approved GM crops

Austria has drafted a "charter for biotechnology freedom" to guarantee farmers and consumers choice about genetically modified crops. "We have to take advantage of all possibilities to satisfy farmers' and consumers' demands for freedom from GM crops," Minister of Environment Josef Proll explains. The country has already banned certain EU-approved GM crops and has received support for this move from EU Environment Ministers (Agrow No 511, p 6). The charter guidelines are to be integrated in a national biotechnology strategy that the country's authorities are in the process of drawing up....
