PMRA: An extended phase-out is required

The Canadian Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) has extended the phase-out of the organophosphate insecticide, azinphos-methyl, until 2012. Last year, the Agency granted a use extension to September 2007 while it examined new worker exposure data (Agrow No 494, p 13). The review did not result in any significant changes to the PMRA's risk assessment, with worker risks remaining a concern. However, an extended phase-out is required due to "significant challenges involved in transitioning from azinphos-methyl to safer alternatives", the Agency notes....
