India mulls agrochemical residue limits in drinks

Maximum residue limits of 1 ppb for individual pesticides should be set for carbonated soft drinks in India, recommends a Ministry of Health committee.

The committee has submitted its recommendations to the Supreme Court, which is looking into the long-running controversy over claims of excessive residues in Indian soft drinks. The claims were criticised for lack of evidence last year (Agrow No 503, p 15). The Court is seeking comments on the proposals from drinks manufacturers and the government, report local media. In 2004, the Bureau of Indian Standards suggested setting a limit for total residues (Agrow No 454, p 19), but the committee concluded that this was not scientifically justified. However, it agreed with earlier recommendations that separate limits should apply to fruit and vegetable juices....
