Guatemalan agrochemical generics industry lobbies government

Guatemalan agrochemical industry representatives have met the Ministry of Agriculture to negotiate new rules on the registration of generic pesticides, the national daily, Siglo XXI, reports.

Legislation on the issue was suspended two and a half years ago. The Guatemalan agrochemical and pharmaceutical industry association, the Asinfargua, complains that Costa Rica will become more competitive and gain an advantage over Guatemalan farmers. Costa Rica adopted the UN FAO equivalence system in January (Agrow No 513, p 14). "If the Ministry does not resolve the issue soon, generic pesticides will gradually disappear from the national market," Asinfargua's Luis Velasquez says. Generic pesticides account for 97% of the $75 million market, general manager of the agrochemical trade union, Agrequima, Julio Ruano, reportedly says....
