Brazil mixed results on residues

ANVISA: Residues are above limits in 14% of analysed crops

Strawberries and lettuces contained the largest levels of pesticide residues in Brazil among foodstuffs surveyed last year, the national health surveillance agency, the ANVISA, reports. The pesticide residue analysis in food programme, the Para, surveyed residues across 16 states in six foodstuffs: lettuces, strawberries, potatoes, tomatoes, oranges and apples. The results show that residues are, on average, above limits in 14% of analysed crops. "This number is evidence of the need to develop strategies that would reduce contamination levels in food," the ANVISA's general manager of toxicology, Luiz Claudio Meirelles, says....
