Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has accepted an application from Monsanto for the approval of food derived from genetically modified insect-resistant MON89034 maize.
The maize expresses the Bt Cry2Ab2 and Cry1A.105 toxins for the control of a wider spectrum of pests than MON810 maize, which was cleared for food use in Australia and New Zealand in 2000. MON810 controls European corn borers (Ostrinia nubilalis) and corn earworms (Helicoverpa zea), while MON89034 adds control of fall armyworms (Spodoptera spp) and black cutworms (Agrotis ipsilon) and improves corn earworm control, Monsanto's application states. The FSANZ's initial assessment of the application is open to public comment until May 2nd. MON89034 is to be field tested in the US this year (Agrow No 513, p 10)...
