1 unless otherwise stated; 2 converted using average annual exchange rates for 2007 and 2006; 3 excludes BioScience sales of Euro 382 million in 2007 and Euro 342 million in 2006; 4 excludes seed sales of $2,018 million in 2007 and $1,743 million in 2006; 5 includes undisclosed seed and trait sales; 6 year ended August 31st 2006/07 - includes some animal health products - excludes seed and genomics sales of $4,964 million in 2007 and $3,978 million in 2006; 7 excludes seed sales, which amounted to $2,764 million in 2006.

All of the six leading agrochemical multinationals recorded sales growth in 2007, with the top four posting double-digit gains in dollar terms. Bayer CropScience and BASF saw only slight rises in their euro reporting currencies, but benefited from the strength of the euro against the dollar in Agrow's dollar-based ranking.

Bayer CropScience retained its leading position with an 11.3% rise in agrochemical sales in dollars euros, or 1.6% in euros. A 3% rise in crop protection sales in euros more than offset a 7.1% fall in non-crop pesticide sales. Crop protection sales grew strongly in Latin America and Europe, but declined in North America and the Asia/Pacific region.

Syngenta saw the largest agrochemical sales rise of all the leading multinationals last year. Sales were up by 14.2% or by 11% at constant exchange rates. The company posted revenue increases in all of its business regions, led by a 37.4% hike in dollar terms in Latin America. It also saw double-digit gains in Europe and Asia/Pacific.

BASF moved ahead of Dow AgroSciences in the ranking on the strength of an 11.6% rise in dollar sales, even though its agrochemical sales rose by just 1.9% in euros. The strength of the Brazilian market boosted BASF's Latin American sales by 21% in euros, while its European sales also advanced. These gains were partly offset by declines in the NAFTA region and Asia/Pacific.

Dow AgroSciences recorded an 11.2% sales increase, with volumes up by 9% and prices by 2%. The company saw volume gains in all of its regions, with growth being led by a 23% rise in Latin America. Revenues benefited from seed company acquisitions in Latin America and Europe. Dow does not break down seed and agrochemical sales, which will inflate its position in Agrow's ranking.

DuPont and Monsanto posted similar increases in agrochemical sales last year of around 8%. DuPont reported year-over-year gains for its agrochemical business at each quarter. The final quarter of the year produced significant gains, particularly in Latin America and Europe. Monsanto saw unexpectedly high sales of its Roundup (glyphosate) herbicide in the year to August 31st 2007. Increased global demand, along with higher prices, boosted its glyphosate revenues by 13.5%.
