Sugar cane to ethanol conversion project receives $866,000 federal grant

The US of Department of energy and agriculture awarded Fredy Altpeter, assistant professor of agronomy at the University of Florida, a $866,576 grant for his GM sugar cane project that aims to improve the output of fermentable sugar for conversion to ethanol.  The project is supported by non-federal match funding totalling to $1,083,220.

“The three-year research project will target efficient conversion of sugar cane residues to ethanol, by altering the genetic composition of the sugar cane plant, thereby reducing raw material costs, enhancing productivity and sustainability”, explains Dr Altpeter.  “It will also support the commercial production of biofuels at prices competitive with fossil fuels.”
