Cellectis seeks monetary damages from Precision Biosciences

The French biotechnology company Cellectis has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against US-based company Precision Biosciences for infringing two Cellectis patents relating to its proprietary meganuclease recombination systems.  The lawsuit has been filed in the Eastern District for North Carolina, US District Court.

The meganucleases are those that target site-specific DNA breaks and cause a desired genetic modification in the given transgenic organism.  The lawsuit seeks monetary damages and an injunction against Precision Biosciences to use, sell, or make the particular meganucleases.   The chief executive officer of Cellectis, Dr Andre Choulika, asserts they take their “intellectual property rights very seriously and intend to vigorously pursue the patent infringement case”.

Cellectis currently holds proprietary rights to over 35 issued patents and 113 pending patent applications. Of these 18 are meganuclease portfolios with modified specificity .
