A more consistent system to measure the linolenic acid content of soybeans is being developed by Monsanto and the Danish analytical technology company, Foss (Hillerød, Denmark).

Monsanto’s Vistive low-linolenic soybeans contain less than 3% linolenic acid and hence produce oil that needs little hydrogenation. The new system will help to distinguish grain that, when processed, will provide food companies an oil not requiring hydrogenation at all. Further plans are in place to identify analytical tools needed to measure other grain metrics or characteristics that are in demand for the food, feed and fuel industries. The new tools will benefit a wide range of users including growers, grain processors and food companies, says Pradip Das, Monsanto’s crop analytics director.
