Senesco/Monsanto licensing deal on yield and stress

Senesco signs licensing agreement with Monsanto

The US biotechnology company, Senesco Technologies (Brunswick, New Jersey), has signed a licensing agreement with Monsanto that will enable the two companies to incorporate Senesco’s proprietary yield and stress technology into maize and soybeans.

Following a decade of developing genetically modified crops expressing input traits, Monsanto is looking to the future by “focusing more on increasing yield and decreasing environmental stress”, says the company’s vice-president of biotechnology, Steve Padgette. The deal with Senesco is seen as one way to accomplish this goal. Senesco has granted exclusive rights to its proprietary gene technology for use in cotton to Bayer CropScience. Senesco’s technology is based on the identification and characterisation of specific genes that are responsible for plant senescence.
