British biodiesel company D1 Oils (Middlesbrough, Teesside) and Dutch genetic research company KeyGene (Wageningen) are to collaborate on a research project on the oil-yielding tree, jatropha.

The inedible oil from jatropha can be refined into high-quality biodiesel.  D1 now holds exclusive rights to applied research carried out on jatropha by KeyGene, and hopes to increase significantly the efficiency of its breeding programme to develop higher-yielding jatropha lines.

“Jatropha is an under-developed crop and understanding its genetic profile will be crucial to its rapid commercialisation as a sustainable energy crop”, says Elliot Mannis, chief executive officer of D1 Oils.  High-yielding jatropha lines developed in the project will be supplied by D1 Oils to D1-BP Fuel Crops, a joint venture formed with oil company BP in July.  Production of jatropha oil for refining into biodiesel is expected to begin in 2008.
