Dutch potato starch company, AVEBE plans to trial GM potatoes

The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre has received notification of field trials of genetically modified starch-reduced potatoes in the Netherlands.

AVEBE, the Dutch potato starch company, plans to conduct trials on potatoes with reduced amylose content between January 1st 2008 and December 31st 2015.

There will be 14 sites of 5,000 m2 and three sites of 15,000 m2 with a maximum of 100,000 m2/ year. Amylose is one of the two components of starch, the other being amyloceptin, and is less readily digested than its partner. The GM potato is characterised by a high level of amyloceptin and a low level of, or no amylose.
