Fungicides took the lead in September with 35 published patent applications. Insecticides followed with 26 and herbicides with 19. There were five additional patent applications, of which one was related to a herbicidal/insecticidal composition, and four to fungicides/insecticides. Agrow Intelligence examined a selection of 85 patent applications published during the month, from a total of 21 applicants.

Bayer CropScience was in the lead with a total of 21 patent applications, of which ten were fungicidal, seven herbicidal and three insecticidal in nature, with an additional patent related to a herbicidal/insecticidal composition. Sumitomo Chemical followed with ten fungicidal patents and ten insecticidal patents. Syngenta and BASF followed with 13 and ten patent applications, respectively.

Particular activity was noticed within the patent applications from Sumitomo Chemical, with ten applications around “plant disease controlling composition and method of controlling plant disease” consisting of synergistic mixtures of fungicidal compounds, four patent applications around an “ester compound and use thereof” and four patents on “pest controlling composition and method of controlling pests” of insecticidal nature.

Granted Patents September 2011

There were 24 granted patents published in September 2011. These patent applications were filed between 2004 and 2010, with the oldest being a Bayer CropScience patent around "synergistic fungicidal active substance combinations" and the latest an insecticidal patent from Dow AgroSciences about “heteroaryl (substituted) alkyl-substituted sulfoximines as insecticides”.
