June 2010 Patent Watch
Insecticides took the lead among pesticide patents in June with 33 out of the 87 published. Fungicides followed with 26 patents and herbicides with 24. There were only four patents related to products with dual mode of action and these were combined fungicide/insecticide products. Several of the patents were mixture related (29); other patents were related compositions of matter of certain active compounds from various chemical families, their targets and specific uses.

Among the companies with published patents last month, Bayer CropScience was in the lead again with 34, of which 19 were herbicidal, seven fungicidal and five insecticidal in nature, while the remainder of the patents had dual pesticidal action (fungicide/insecticide).
Sumitomo Chemical came second with a total of 13 patents, of which seven were insecticide-related and six fungicidal. Syngenta was close behind with a total of 12 patents, of which eight were fungicide-related, three insecticide-related and one had dual action. BASF followed with eight patents, Dow AgroSciences had five patents and DuPont three. There were in total 11 companies with published patents last month.

Bayer revealed particular activity with a series of patents revolving around a composition containing a carboxylic acid derivative and a safener for the control of weeds in wheat. Syngenta had several patents published on a fungicidal mixture of a methyl-pyrazole-carboxylic acid-tetrahydro-methano-naphthalen-yl-amide compound and a strobilurin and/ or azole fungicide. Sumitomo published a mixture of ethaboxam and metconazole as a fungicidal composition for the control of diseases in plants. Dow revealed a series of patents involving n-substituted sulfoximines as a means to effective insect control.
There were three patents for which companies could not be identified. They were referred back to their particular scientists/inventors.
