Like chlorantraniliprole, HGW86 also binds to the ryanodine receptor (RyR). Binding to the receptor mediates the release of calcium ions which results in impaired muscle contraction in the insect and ultimately death. Other commercialised RyR binders include Nihon Nohyaku's flubendiamide.

HGW86 was tested in Brazil in 2006 for use on beans, maize, sugar cane, cotton, coffee, citros, tomatoe, potato, oats, cantaloups, wheat and rice.
