DuPont sweeps Agrow Awards
Agrow World Crop Protection News
Monday, 22 October 2007

DuPont was the big winner at Agrow’s inaugural industry awards ceremony, which was held in association with the BCPC in Glasgow, UK, this month.  Dr John Bedbrook, vice-president of agriculture and nutrition research and development, picked up three awards on behalf of the company for most innovative chemistry, best novel agricultural biotechnology and best R&D pipeline.

DuPont’s new insecticide, Rynaxypyr (chlorantraniliprole), received the award for most innovative chemistry, while its Optimum GAT herbicide tolerance system was judged to be the best novel agricultural biotechnology.  The combination of agrochemicals and biotechnology traits made DuPont’s R&D pipeline the best of those submitted for the award.

The award for the best new crop protection product went to Monsanto’s insect-resistant and glyphosate-tolerant YieldGard VT Triple maize.  Dow AgroSciences won the best formulations innovation with its EcoZome technology.

The best supplier to the crop protection industry was judged to be the German custom manufacturing company, Saltigo.  The best company from an emerging region was United Phosphorus, following its rapid expansion in recent years.  The award for the best supporting role went to the contract research company, Huntingdon Life Sciences.

The German Crop Protection Pest Control and Fertilizer Association won the award for the best public outreach programme with its “Food for Life!” scheme promoting the benefits of crop protection.  The Canadian industry association, CropLife Canada, collected the best stewardship programme award for its “stewardshipfirst” scheme.

Each of these awards was decided by an independent panel of 13 judges from across the industry.  The final award for lifetime achievement was decided by Agrow’s readers from a shortlist of four outstanding candidates.  The most votes were cast for Dr Bob Holm, a 40-year industry veteran who is best known for his recent leadership of the US minor-use IR-4 programme.
