The New Zealand Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has received an application from Cheminova to import the insecticide, Tripsol (acrinathrin 22.5 g/litre + abamectin 12.6 g/litre), for the control of potato/tomato psyllids (Bactericera cockerelli). The novel emulsion formulation is not registered anywhere in the world, the EPA notes. Abamectin is already approved in New Zealand, but acrinathrin is not. Trials in New Zealand have shown Tripsol to be more effective against B cockerelli on ...

The Brazilian national health surveillance agency, the Anvisa, has recommended bans on the insecticide/acaricides, parathion-methyl and phorate. The move is the latest decision covering the reassessment of 14 pesticide active ingredients (Agrow passim). Parathion-methyl is authorised in Brazil for use on nine crops, including the major ones, cotton, maize, soybeans and wheat. Anvisa director Agenor Álvares says the agency found that the insecticide possessed “neurotoxic, immunotoxic, ...

The Canadian Pest Management Regulatory Authority (PMRA) is to review a group of pyrethroid and pyrethrin insecticides and related synergists as a “pyrethroid cluster”. The aim is to provide a consistent approach to risk assessments and risk management, the PMRA points out. The group comprises: the insecticides, allethrin, cyfluthrin, cypermethrin, deltamethrin, D-phenothrin, lambda-cyhalothrin, permethrin, pyrethrins, resmethrin and tetramethrin; and the synergists, piperonyl butoxide and ...

Cotton insecticide prices were rising in Brazil’s three main cotton-growing areas in the last quarter of 2011. A “typical” basket of such products had increased from R$509-701/ha (US$279-384/ha at the current rate) to R$561-757/ha ($307-415/ha) from early October to the end of November, newswire Agrolink reports. In the south-east, rises were in excess of 10%, but at least 8% in most regions.

Syngenta and UK-based not-for-profit organisation Innovative Vector Control Consortium (IVCC - Liverpool) have launched a project to develop a new insecticidal active ingredient for public health applications. The project is meant to end the “drought of new public health products” for mosquito control, which has arisen because the profiles of agrochemical insecticides often do not match those required for public health application. It aims to especially target mosquito strains that have ...

Bayer CropScience has agreed a three-year deal with a UK-based not-for-profit vector control company to develop new active ingredients for public health use. The agreement with Innovative Vector Control Consortium (IVCC - Liverpool) aims to develop products effective against mosquitoes that transmit diseases such as malaria but are resistant to conventional insecticides. Bayer will supply its “extensive range of substances and screening capabilities”, it says. Substances showing promise in ...

The US EPA is seeking views on its assessments of the benefits of the organochlorine insecticide, endosulfan, and on a petition to ban the active ingredient. The environmentalist groups, the Natural Resources Defense Council and Pesticides Action Network, filed the petition last year in response to the Agency’s 2007 risk assessments on endosulfan (Agrow No 532, p 14). The groups sought the cancellation of all uses and the revocation of all tolerances on the grounds of endosulfan’s toxicity, ...

The US EPA has issued its first endangered species protection bulletin through the new online system, “BulletinsLive!”. It has imposed local use restrictions on the insecticide, methoxyfenozide, on cranberries in 15 counties in Wisconsin to protect the Karner blue butterfly and its habitats. Dow AgroSciences markets methoxyfenozide as Intrepid for use on cotton and a range of fruit and vegetable crops. The enforceable use restrictions prohibit the use of methoxyfenozide in specified areas ...
