November 2009 Patent Watch
In a departure from the trend observed in the last two months, insecticides
took the top spot in the number of patent applications filed in November.
Another deviation was a tendency for the development of new combination
products targeting more than one type of pest. The predominant type was of
fungicide-insecticide combination, which prevailed over herbicide-fungicide
or herbicide-insecticide combinations.

Patent applications focused on combinations (or mixtures) of active ingredients with different modes of action. While six patents dealt with dual pesticide action, two were related to products based on natural extracts exhibiting fungicidal activity.

Among companies filing the applications, Bayer CropScience took the lead yet again, with a total of 11 patent applications, of which six related to insecticidal active ingredients. BASF was the runner-up with eight patent applications, a trend similar to the one witnessed in October. Other companies with two or more patent applications included Dow AgroSciences, DuPont, Ishihara Sangyo Kaisha, Sumitomo Chemical and Syngenta.
